The Freedom Square (Tavisuplebis moëdani) in central Tbilisi, where Rustaveli Avenue ends. On top of the pillar there is a golden statue of St. George slaying the dragon. Needless to say, St. George is considered as the patron saint of Georgia. In the Soviet times, there used to be a statue of Lenin instead of St. George.

Saint George slaying the dragon – a top favourite topic of church art in Georgia.

Middle Eastern Christians connect the myth of St. George and the dragon to the Saint George’s bay on the northern side of Beirut, where the epic battle is said to have happened. Or maybe where it will happen, because the fight between St. George and the dragon also symbolizes Christ slaying Satan in the final battle. Or the battle of good and evil in general.

I was amazed when I learned in Ethiopia, where this topic is also a favourite piece of church art, that the maiden whom St. George saves from the tower guarded by the dragon is known as Birutawit – i.e. the lady from Beirut.

Georgia was the second oldest Christian kingdom of the world, after Armenia. Every piece of its soil has ancient legends connected to it, from the Antiquity, Middle Ages, and early Renaissance.
